The decision to have breast reconstruction surgery is an extremely personal one. Our job is to provide you all the information you need to make the right decision for your individual goals and desires. Dr. Cotter will discuss the all of the risks associated with breast reconstruction surgery during your consultation. Great results are expected from your procedure, however, every patient is an individual and as such, we cannot make a guarantee of a specific outcome. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary.
Breast reconstruction surgery typically takes one to two hours.Once complete, you will be transferred to the recovery area and monitored closely. Dr. Cotter will take this opportunity to meet with your family member(s), friend or care-giver to update them on the outcome of the procedure, review post-op instructions and answer any questions they may have. A copy of Dr. Cotter’s post-op instructions, any written prescriptions and the date and time of your initial post-op appointment will be given to the patient upon discharge from the facility.

Most patients are up and around in about 24 to 48 hours following the surgery, but you will likely feel tired and sore for a few days.Dissolving stitches are used to close the incisions, which are sometimes taped for extra support. A gauze bandage is usually applied to help with healing. You will be instructed to wear your surgical bra for several weeks postoperatively. There should be no heavy lifting, strenuous activity or “straining” for two more weeks. Return to work or other activities will be determined by Dr. Cotter during your post op visits.
